Port Harcourt is a wonderful city, with the oil money flowing with amazing structures. In as much the city is fine, there are still areas to be amended.

Few years back, I had been hearing about Port Harcourt and it’s wonderful settings. I wished to live and work there. I was just looking for the opportunity till NYSC called. That gave me a little experience about the city.

Port Harcourt is a nice place to start up a good life or relocate to. There are companies, industries which are mostly oil and gas, engineering. In as much the city is good, there are some factors to consider.

Here are 4 things to note about starting a life in Port Harcourt.

High Cost of commodities: Cost of living in Port Harcourt is too high. Having stayed in Nigeria’s top mega cities, Abuja and Lagos, I can say that cost of commodities in Port Harcourt is on a high side compared to Abuja and Lagos. The worse part of it is there is no just any reason for the high cost and nothing special about those commodities. The malt drink sold in Lagos, Abuja and other places in Nigeria for N150 is N200, N250 in Port Harcourt. Same with most commodities too.

So if you are planning on relocating to Port Harcourt, think about the high cost of commodities, if you can meet up then you are good to go.

Accommodation: Accommodation in Port Harcourt is quite expensive. Getting good accommodation is not a problem but money. So if you wish to relocate, there are no cheaper houses and if you want the best, you should spend big in a well conducive environment.

Security: They have two religions in Rivers state, Christian and politics. Christian is their first religion then politics is the second. Rivers people don’t joke with politics. Most of the insecurities in Rivers state are politically motivated. Port Harcourt has the highest rate of kidnappings in Nigeria, and most of them are not reported on the media.

Am not trying to say other towns are secured but Port Harcourt insecurities are high. Were you have kidnappings, killings, arm robbery and others.

We all love to stay in place with a rest of mind, not every night you keep hearing gunshots. Though there are some areas in Port Harcourt that are relatively peaceful.

High cost of living: The total cost of living in Port Harcourt is on a high side. If you are single and yet to have a job, and thinking of a place to relocate to on a low budget, Port Harcourt might not be the place for you. Unless maybe you have a place already for you to stay.
